Grab a pen and a nice card and get ready to write three sentences.
First, say thank you and specify what the person did for you. Easy. “Thank you for the delicious marmalade.”
Second, say briefly what the favor or gift meant to you. The shorter the better; go on too long, and you may sound insincere. “Orange marmalade is my favorite topping for toast - I’m not sure how you even knew that” is plenty long enough. Don’t add that you’ve levelled up your toast game. You want to make people smile, not throw up in their mouth a little.
Finally, add a small personal comment or wish. “I hope you and the guinea pigs are enjoying the summer” is better than “I hope you are enjoying the summer,” but don’t try too hard if you don’t know the person’s current circumstances. You don’t want to refer to guinea pigs that have gone to the great hutch in the sky.
That’s it! Wrap it up with your favorite closing. “Best regards” is my go-to. The main thing is to get it in the mail and not struggle too much.
