Services that aggregate your commercial email or features like Gmail’s “Promotions” in-box reduce the impact of marketing emails on your attention, but they do nothing to mitigate “data creep.”
Besides being a great insult for nerds, data creep is the collection of many data points about an individual, usually for use in marketing. The more email lists you’re on, the more organizations have at least some data about you, and the more likely they are to share the data.
If the paragraph you’ve just read persuades you to unsubscribe, your next thought may be: “But it’s so time-consuming!” Should you use tools like unroll.me? I wouldn’t. “Free” unsubscription services derive data from your use of them, and use this data for commercial purposes or worse, as in Unroll.me’s sale of data about Lyft riders to Uber.
