Keeping your audience (and yourself) awake during Zoom meetings

Who needs sleeping pills when there are Zoom meetings? Putting aside the scientific reasons why online calls are so exhausting, here's how you can stay awake and keep other fellow meeting victims (sorry, attendees) engaged.

If Zoom meetings were sleeping pills
  • Mitigate Zoom fatigue by changing your physical and tech setup. Try standing instead of sitting, hiding the view of yourself, etc.
  • Try some conversation starters to help others participate, even if it feels awkward to you.
  • Be respectful of basic meeting etiquette. Arrive 5 minutes earlyl in case you have tech issues. Don’t chew gum or eat.
  • Remember you’re on camera! 2020 had some amazing stories, but I have seen people picking their nose in Zoom meetings as recently as 2025.
  • This last one applies to all meetings, not just online ones. Always be tweaking! If a meeting seems useless or deadly dull, consider changing the format, the timing, the list of attendees. etc.
